Textile and apparel businessmen get most of the CIP cards

The government has selected 182 businesspeople as awarded CIP (Commercially Important Persons) due to their outstanding contribution to the country’s economy in export in 2017.



136 persons were given the cards for their outstanding performance in the export category where majority them were from the textile and apparel industry. Other 46 were given the cards under the ex-officio trade category among the recipients.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Commerce Ministry Tofail Ahmed handed over the CIP cards to the selected awardees at a function held at the Hotel Intercontinental in the city on Wednesday, reports BSS.



Speaking at the function, Tipu Munshi said the number of CIP cardholders is increasing every year as the volume of the country’s export is going up day by day. “We give the recognition to the businessmen for encouraging them. We are selecting the CIP card receivers as per the standard of the products and volume of the export. We hope that the number of CIP cardholders will increase in the next year,” he added.



Tofail underscored the need for diversification of export products for increasing the volume of export.



Bangladesh, which started its journey as a garment manufacturing nation in late 1970, now the second-largest apparel exporters worldwide, and the credit goes to the businessmen Minister Munshi said.



Commerce Secretary Dr. M Zafar Uddin presided over the function while president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Sheikh Fazle Fahim and Vice-Chairmen of the Export Promotion Bureau Fatema Yeasmin delivered speeches.
